Ways To Be A Good Neighbor To Someone Selling His Or Her Home

Posted on: 5 January 2017

When your neighbor lists his or her home for sale, you'll often either experience a feeling of sadness or a feeling of relief. The former will happen if you've been close with your neighbor while the latter can occur if you weren't on good terms with him or her. In either case, it's nice to be supportive of the process, and there are a number of different ways that you can be a good neighbor while the house is on the market. Here are some selected things that you can do.

Keep Your Yard In Top Shape

When prospective buyers arrive to look at your neighbor's home, they'll also be evaluating the neighborhood as a whole. You can help give people a favorable impression of the area by keeping your yard in optimal condition. In the summer, this means keeping your lawn cut; in the winter, this means keeping your driveway and front walkway shoveled. If you have children, ensure that their toys aren't left in the front yard, too. Trimming any overgrown trees and bushes is also important to improve the look of your yard, thus helping the area look its best.

Offer Up Your Driveway For Parking

If parking on the street around your home is at a premium, consider offering up your driveway at certain times. For example, if your neighbor's driveway is full and his or her real estate agent is dropping over, tell your neighbor to let the agent know that he or she can park in your driveway. Similarly, if there's an open house that has been scheduled and you know that you won't be home, tell your neighbor to have the agent let people know that they can park in your driveway. This may seem small, but it can help people attend the open house instead of get frustrated with the lack of parking and drive away.

Act Appropriately During Open Houses

You can easily find out when your neighbor is having an open house — typically, there will be a lawn sign with this information. During these short periods of time, make sure that your behavior doesn't do anything to scare people away. For example, this might not be the best time to have your child's garage band rehearse loudly. Or, it may not be the time to sunbathe in the nude on your back deck. Remember, how you act can influence whether people will want to buy your neighbor's house or not.
