Use These Strategies To Convert A Home Office Into A Spare Bedroom Before Your Open House

Posted on: 13 December 2016

If you work from home and have decided to list your residence for sale, it can be a good idea to convert your home office to a spare bedroom before your first open house. Even though people touring through the home will understand that the room you've been using as an office doesn't have to be used in a similar manner if they were to buy the house, they may have trouble visualizing the space as a bedroom. Given that it's likely more people will use the room in question as a bedroom than a home office, it's in your best interest to convert the space to make it more appealing. If you don't have the furnishings to do so, here are some things you can do.

Hire A Staging Professional

Ask your real estate agent to recommend a staging professional who can turn your home office into a stylish, functional bedroom for people to see upon attending your open house. Stagers keep a supply of furniture, storage, and decor items that they can use to transform the function and appearance of a room, and a bit of work from your stager will send a clear message to those at the open house that this room works effectively as a bedroom. A stager can even set the room up to have a certain theme, such as a room for a teenager.

Borrow From Friends Who Have Stored Items

If you know some friends or family members who keep storage units, ask if they might have the necessary items to furnish your former home office to turn it into a spare bedroom. While it's ideal if you can obtain a matching bedroom set, this isn't absolutely necessary. A bed, dresser, desk, bookshelf, and other similar items are the core of what you'll need for this room to convert its usage. If your friends have art or other decorations in storage, you might consider borrowing these items, too, as long as you don't overdo it and clutter the room.

Visit A Thrift Store

If you don't have another way to get the necessary furnishings to turn your home office into a spare bedroom for your open house, browsing at a thrift store can be the answer. In this retailer, you'll be able to buy the basics for the room conversion without spending much money, and, after you've sold your home, you might even wish to drop the items back off at the thrift store, as they'll have done their job.
