4 Things That Should Be At The Top Of Every Homeowner's "Must Have" List

Posted on: 29 January 2021

Creating a "must have" list for your next home is exciting. People typically have everything from very specific items, like more kitchen counter space and four bedrooms, to abstract ideas, like a home that is filled with light. Here are four items, however, that should top every home buyer's "must have" list.

1. Square footage: There is an age-old saying that states you should buy as much square footage as you can afford. As long as you stay within a comfortable budget, this is sage advice. Having extra room allows you to grow into your house over time and prevents the necessity of moving frequently. Having extra square footage in terms of closets, bathrooms, bedrooms, and overall storage space now can help you stay put in the future.

2. Commute time: While the pandemic may have changed how America works, there will come a time when you need to drive into the office again, even if it is only once a week. The length of your commute should be a priority when house hunting. Furthermore, states in the sunbelt, like Arizona, need to be conscious of which direction their commute is. Driving east into the rising sun or west into the setting sun can be extremely distracting and uncomfortable in a southern state.

3. Garage parking spaces: No matter where in the country you live, garage spaces are a benefit. They allow you to park your vehicle indoors, keeping it safe from inclement weather, the sun's damaging UV rays, and the risk of vandalism. Unfortunately, you also need to fit recreational equipment, sports gear, holiday decorations, lawn tools, and overflow storage into that space. This can quickly lead to a crowded mess that slowly forces your automobiles outside.

Having extra garage space, even if it is in the form of a carport, is important and should be at the top of your "must have" list.

4. School district:  While each state has different rules regarding school of choice and charter schools, a good school district should be at the top of every home buyer's list. If you purchase a less expensive house in a less desirable school district, you may be forced to move if you later have school-age children. Likewise, a good school district makes your home more valuable to a future buyer when you do decide to sell.

When creating your "must have" list be sure to include the above four items. Doing so will ensure that you enjoy your new home for many years to come.
