Which New Homes for Sale Will Survive an Apocalypse?

Posted on: 19 December 2016

While an apocalypse is probably the farthest thing from most peoples' minds, recent political upsets may have created a sense of impending doom that would cause you to look for refuge. If it just so happens that you are also looking at new homes for sale, you may combine your need for a new home with the need to hunker down during an apocalypse. Here are just a few suggestions of what new homes may be perfect for end-of-the-world conditions.

Gated Communities with Security

When the rest of the world goes crazy, anyone who is the least bit human will rush towards security. Gated communities with security cameras and lockdown capabilities are exactly the kinds of places that can offer you more peace, safety and security. There are almost always some houses still available in existing communities, and communities that are currently being built and developed will have several more homes and properties for you to choose from. Be sure to choose your new home within a gated community that features really high stone walls surrounding the entire community. Then you will be adequately protected against whatever mayhem breaks loose outside the walls.

Homes Hundreds of Miles Away from Major Cities

Apocalyptic events almost always start within large cities. As you house hunt and look to avoid future apocalypses, buy a home that is far away from most major cities. For example, you do not want to live within five hundred miles of Washington, D.C. or New York City, if you can help it. Much smaller cities and country houses are a sufficient distance away from these cities, which provides some minor insulation against catastrophic events and the opportunity to make decisions about staying in your home versus evacuating after a national crisis occurs.

Converted Abandoned Prisons

Most people would forgo the idea of remodeling a prison into new homes. However, it is a very possible option, and you can even build additional houses in the prison yard and around the outside of the prison walls. The double wire fence that surrounds most prisons would be effective for keeping invading intruders (or zombies) out, and everyone else inside safe. If the wire fences and outer grounds were invaded, everyone could come into the prison and wall up there for weeks. Additionally, there is more than enough storage room for food goods that you can either stock ahead or forage and collect after a catastrophe hits.
